How to Beat Mohg, Lord of Blood in Elden Ring
Mohg, Lord of Blood is one of Elden Ring's defining demigod fights — a fast, aggressive boss whose trident combos give way to an unavoidable bleed-based phase transition and a chaotic flying second phase soaked in bloodflame. He also happens to be a gate: alongside Starscourge Radahn, defeating Mohg is required to reach Miquella's cocoon and unlock the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, which keeps this fight in constant demand years after launch. This guide covers where to find him, how to survive the Nihil bleed nuke that starts phase 2, what changes once he takes flight, and the weapons, talismans, and Spirit Ashes that make the fight manageable.
01Two Mohgs — Make Sure You're Fighting the Right One
Elden Ring has two separate encounters with Mohg, and it's easy to mix them up when searching for help. Mohg, the Omen is an optional early-game mini-boss found in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds beneath Leyndell — a weaker preview fight that most players can skip. Mohg, Lord of Blood is the full demigod shardbearer boss fought at Mohgwyn Palace, and it's this fight — much longer, with a full phase transition and flight phase — that most players mean when they ask how to beat Mohg. This guide covers the Lord of Blood fight.
02How to Reach Mohg, Lord of Blood
There are two ways to reach Mohgwyn Palace and start the fight:
- Normal route: progress through the Mountaintops of the Giants area to reach the Dynasty Mausoleum. From the Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance Site of Grace, head up through the mausoleum, past the Imprisoned Merchant, to the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint Site of Grace. An elevator there descends directly into Mohgwyn Palace and the boss arena.
- Early shortcut via Varré's questline: talk to White-Faced Varré at Rose Church in Liurnia after acquiring a Great Rune, and choose to side with him. He gives you Festering Bloody Fingers, which you use to invade other players' worlds three times. Varré then asks you to soak the Lord of Blood's Favor cloth in a Finger Maiden's blood — either through his own quest chain or, more directly, by returning to the Chapel of Anticipation via the Four Belfries, killing the Grafted Scion, and soaking the cloth on the maiden's corpse there. Bringing the soaked cloth back to Varré rewards the Pureblood Knight's Medal, which warps you straight to Mohgwyn Palace — a legitimate way to reach this fight (and the item drops it's built around) far earlier than the story otherwise allows.
Before the fight, it's worth grabbing Mohg's Shackle from the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds beneath Leyndell (found near the Underground Roadside Site of Grace, in the lowest level guarded by giant crayfish) — it has a direct combat use in the fight itself, covered below.
03Phase 1 — Trident Combos, Bloodflame Talons, and Mohg's Shackle
Mohg's first phase revolves around his trident. His combos are mostly 2-3 hit horizontal swings that roll forward through cleanly, but watch for two specific attacks: Bloodflame Talons, a claw slash followed by a delayed explosion (dodge at the moment of detonation, not the initial slash), and Bloodboon, a blood splash that leaves floor hazards behind, sometimes as a wide arc and sometimes as a narrow cone.
Mohg's Shackle is the single most useful item for this phase. Using it slams Mohg to the ground and pins him for a few seconds, dealing no damage itself but opening a free window for stance damage, status buildup, or just raw hits. It only works twice, and only during phase 1 — once Mohg crosses the health threshold into his transformation, the shackle stops working, so use both charges while he's still well above that line rather than saving them for emergencies.
04The Nihil Transition — Surviving the Unavoidable Bleed Nuke
At roughly the halfway point of his health bar, Mohg raises his trident and counts down in Latin — "Trēs... Duo... Ūnus..." — before shouting "Nihil" three times in a row. This attack cannot be dodged, blocked away, or outranged: it inflicts massive hemorrhage damage across all three chants while healing Mohg a meaningful chunk of health, and simply eating it unprepared can strip most of a health bar in seconds.
The standard counter is the Purifying Crystal Tear, mixed into your Wondrous Physick before the chant begins. It negates the bleed buildup from Nihil and significantly reduces the raw damage, turning a near-death moment into a manageable hit — some players can even keep attacking through the chant instead of turtling. You get the Purifying Crystal Tear either by completing Bloody Finger Hunter Yura's questline (defeating Eleonora, Violet Bloody Finger — an enemy invader in that questline, not an ally — at the Second Church of Marika) or simply by progressing the main path to the Mountaintops of the Giants and returning to that same church. If you don't have it yet, keep healing flasks ready and expect to burn one immediately after each chant.
05Phase 2 — Wings, Bloodflame Floor, and the Plunging Attack
After the Nihil transition, Mohg sprouts wings, his trident is permanently coated in bloodflame, and the fight becomes far more chaotic. He spends much of phase 2 airborne, and almost every attack now leaves burning bloodflame on the ground that lingers and stacks bleed buildup even if you're not looking at it.
- Plunging attack: a heavy landing hit followed by a delayed explosion. Strafe to the side rather than rolling straight back — Mohg tracks and adjusts his landing to catch a predictable roll.
- Swooping lunge: a flying charge coated in bloodflame; dodge forward through the initial lunge, then reassess for a follow-up.
- Aerial bloodflame throw: he flings bloodflame from range before closing in; roll to the side to find a gap between the flame patches rather than running straight away.
Staying close reduces how much of the floor bloodflame you're standing in, but at close range hemorrhage buildup from his melee hits becomes almost unavoidable over a long fight — plan your healing around eating a bleed proc rather than expecting to dodge every source of it.
06Weaknesses, Best Weapons, and Spirit Ashes
Mohg takes normal damage from Standard, Slash, Strike, and Pierce attacks with no glaring physical resistance, but he resists Fire, Magic, Lightning, and Holy, and is highly resistant to Poison, Scarlet Rot, and Frostbite. He is not immune to Hemorrhage, which is why bleed weapons are a longstanding go-to for this fight.
- Bleed melee: Rivers of Blood and Eleonora's Poleblade are popular picks because their weapon arts apply hemorrhage quickly with relatively safe animations.
- Sorcery: Comet Azur can shred Mohg's health bar quickly from range, provided you can keep enough distance to avoid his melee combos and Bloodflame Talons.
- Talisman: Lord of Blood's Exultation boosts your own attack power by 20% for 20 seconds whenever a hemorrhage proc happens nearby — including from Mohg's own bleed-inflicting attacks landing on you — which makes it a strong pick for almost any build in this specific fight, not just dedicated bleed builds.
- Spirit Ash: a summon that reliably holds Mohg's aggro, such as a strong Mimic Tear, buys you free hits from behind while he's focused elsewhere — useful throughout both phases, but especially valuable during the chaotic aerial phase 2.
07Rewards — What You Get for Defeating Mohg
Defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood grants 420,000 Runes, the Remembrance of the Blood Lord, and Mohg's Great Rune. Trade the Remembrance with Enia at the Roundtable Hold for either Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear (a great spear whose weapon skill, Bloodboon Ritual, stabs the wielder to coat the weapon in bloodflame — combined blood and fire damage — for a short window) or the Bloodboon incantation — you can only pick one per playthrough copy of the Remembrance, so check both before deciding.
Just as importantly, defeating both Mohg and Starscourge Radahn lets you interact with the bloodied arm hanging from the cocoon in Mohg's throne room — the demigod Miquella. Doing so opens the portal into the Land of Shadow, making this fight a hard requirement for accessing the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.
FAQ
Where do I find Mohg, Lord of Blood in Elden Ring?
He's fought at Mohgwyn Palace. Reach it normally by progressing to the Mountaintops of the Giants and taking the elevator down from the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint Site of Grace, or reach it much earlier by completing the first stages of White-Faced Varré's questline at Rose Church in Liurnia to obtain the Pureblood Knight's Medal, which warps you directly there.
What is Mohg's Nihil attack and how do I survive it?
At roughly the midpoint of his health bar, Mohg chants a countdown in Latin then shouts "Nihil" three times, dealing unavoidable hemorrhage damage across all three chants while healing himself. Mix the Purifying Crystal Tear into your Wondrous Physick before the chant starts to negate most of the bleed buildup and damage — it's obtainable by completing Bloody Finger Hunter Yura's questline or simply by visiting the Second Church of Marika after progressing to the Mountaintops of the Giants.
Should I use Mohg's Shackle during the fight?
Yes — it's one of the strongest tools available for this boss. Using it pins Mohg to the ground for a few seconds with no damage of its own, but it opens a free window to land hits or build status effects. It only works twice and only during phase 1, so use both charges before he reaches the health threshold that triggers his Nihil transformation.
Is Mohg weak to bleed in Elden Ring?
Yes. Mohg has no special resistance to Hemorrhage, which is why bleed weapons like Rivers of Blood and Eleonora's Poleblade are consistently recommended for this fight. He does resist Fire, Magic, Lightning, and Holy damage, and is highly resistant to Poison, Scarlet Rot, and Frostbite, so elemental status builds other than bleed generally underperform here.
What's the difference between Mohg, the Omen and Mohg, Lord of Blood?
Mohg, the Omen is an optional, much easier early-game mini-boss fought in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds beneath Leyndell. Mohg, Lord of Blood is the full demigod shardbearer fight at Mohgwyn Palace, with the Nihil phase transition and flying second phase — this is the fight most players mean when they ask how to beat Mohg, and the one required for Shadow of the Erdtree access.
What do you get for beating Mohg in Elden Ring?
420,000 Runes, the Remembrance of the Blood Lord (tradeable for Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear or the Bloodboon incantation), and Mohg's Great Rune. Defeating Mohg alongside Starscourge Radahn also unlocks Miquella's cocoon in Mohg's throne room, which is the entry point into the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.
