GTA 5 Secrets & Easter Eggs — Every Hidden Mystery

Grand Theft Auto V is stuffed with hidden content that Rockstar never announced officially: crashed flying saucers, a ghost that appears only between 11 PM and midnight, a murder mystery spanning 50 collectible letter scraps, and a mountain mural that has kept players theorising since 2013. This guide covers every confirmed GTA 5 secret and easter egg, explains how to trigger each one, and clearly separates the unsolved rumours from the real in-game rewards.

01The Mount Chiliad Mystery — Mural, Symbols, and What Was Solved

At the summit of Mount Chiliad, inside the cable car station at the top, a large mural is painted on the wall. It depicts the mountain itself alongside three symbols connected by maze-like lines: a UFO, a jetpack, and what appears to be a cracked alien egg. Beneath these symbols is the message "Come back when your story is complete."

This mural became one of the most discussed mysteries in gaming history. Players spent years trying to decode it:

• The UFO symbol — resolved: Achieving 100% story completion causes three UFOs to appear across the map (see section below). The mural was a hint at this reward. A fourth UFO (the sunken one near Paleto Bay) is accessible from the start without any requirement.
• The jetpack — still unresolved: Despite over a decade of searching, no one has found a functional jetpack hidden in GTA 5's single-player story. A jetpack was added to GTA Online as an independent vehicle — but the community treats this as a separate addition, not the Chiliad mural's hidden secret.
• The alien egg — still unresolved: No in-game alien egg collectible or location tied to the mural has been confirmed in story mode.

The current consensus is that the mural's UFO and flight symbols were intended as hints toward the 100%-completion UFO reward. The jetpack and egg elements may be red herrings, unimplemented content, or an ongoing tease Rockstar has never publicly addressed. The inscription "Come back when your story is complete" is the clearest design intent the game provides.

02All 4 UFO Locations — How to Find Every Flying Saucer

There are four UFOs in GTA 5. Three require 100% game completion to appear; one is always accessible.

1. Sunken UFO near Paleto Bay (no requirements): A crashed, partially buried flying saucer rests on the ocean floor northeast of Paleto Bay. Take a submersible (accessible via the Sonar Collections Dock or Trevor's properties) and dive to the north edge of the map. This is the only UFO available from the start of the game.
2. Mount Chiliad UFO (100% completion required): After reaching 100%, return to the peak of Mount Chiliad at approximately 3 AM in-game time during stormy weather. A large, glowing UFO hovers silently above the summit. Approach from the cable car station or by parachuting in from above.
3. Fort Zancudo UFO (100% completion required): Fly directly above the Fort Zancudo military base — the UFO hovers high above the restricted airspace. Reaching it triggers a five-star wanted level from the base. The craft will destroy your aircraft if you fly into it, so observe from a safe altitude.
4. Sandy Shores UFO (100% completion required): This UFO floats at the game's maximum aircraft altitude, directly above the "Beam Me Up" alien sculpture east of Sandy Shores. Fly as high as possible in a helicopter or plane above the sculpture to spot it. It bears an FIB (the game's FBI analogue) marking on its underside.

All three post-completion UFOs appear as large, dark craft with lights around the rim. They cannot be destroyed and disappear if you attempt to land on them. Their appearance after 100% completion is Rockstar's answer to the mural's "Come back when your story is complete" inscription.

03Frozen Alien — Found in the Prologue

During the Prologue mission set in Ludendorff, North Yankton, the getaway route takes you across a bridge over a frozen river. At the railroad crossing, veer right and drive down the embankment toward the bridge. Look into the frozen water below — the body of an alien is clearly visible beneath the ice, apparently having crashed its craft into the river.

Viewing the alien means abandoning the getaway vehicle long enough to fail the mission. You can revisit the same Ludendorff area later in the story during the mission "Bury the Hatchet" — the frozen alien is still there, and you can observe it without failing anything.

To explore freely: the Prologue can also be replayed from the pause menu under Mission Replay after it is complete.

04The Ghost of Mount Gordo — Jolene Cranley-Evans

On the eastern peak of Mount Gordo, on a large flat rock near the cliff edge, a ghost appears for exactly one in-game hour each night. The trigger is precise: between 11 PM and midnight only. Weather conditions do not affect the appearance.

The ghost is a translucent female figure with long dark hair and a white dress. Beneath it, the word JOCK is written in blood on the rock. If you approach the apparition on foot it fades away — but you can observe it safely through a sniper rifle scope or through the in-game phone camera from a distance.

The identity is confirmed by in-game lore: Jolene Cranley-Evans was the wife of Jock Cranley, a character referenced in GTA 5's radio stations as a former stuntman-turned-politician. During the 1970s, Jock pushed her off the cliff on Mount Gordo so he could pursue his career in Los Santos. The "JOCK" inscription is her accusation. At midnight, both the ghost and the blood disappear until the following in-game night.

05Bigfoot — Fake Sighting, Thermal Scope, and the Real Peyote Secret

GTA 5 contains multiple layers of Bigfoot content, ranging from obvious joke to a genuine hidden unlock:

The Fake Bigfoot — "The Last One" mission: After completing 100% of the story, a Strangers & Freaks mission called "The Last One" becomes available for Franklin. It involves tracking down a creature in the woods near Mount Chiliad. The payoff is deliberately anticlimactic — Scooby-Doo style, the creature turns out to be a person wearing a Bigfoot suit.

Thermal Signature in "Predator" mission: During the story mission Predator, Michael uses a sniper rifle with thermal scope from a helicopter. Among the heat signatures of the O'Neil brothers in the forest below, there is a second signature at the lower right that does not belong to any named character. It disappears after a few seconds — a Bigfoot cameo hidden in plain sight during a standard mission.

The Real Bigfoot — Peyote Plants: There are 27 peyote plants hidden across the map in story mode. Consuming one transforms the player into a random animal (any of the three playable characters can use them). After collecting all 27 and completing "The Last One," seven Golden Peyote Plants unlock — one per day of the week, appearing only between 5:30 AM and 8:00 AM in snowy or foggy weather. Each golden plant is in a different location. Consuming a golden peyote transforms the player into Bigfoot (Sasquatch). Collecting all seven golden peyotes unlocks a Bigfoot boss encounter.

The peyote plant system is one of the most elaborate secret rewards in the game — it requires first completing the story (100%), then doing a week-long hunt with strict time and weather windows.

06The Leonora Johnson Murder Mystery — 50 Letter Scraps

In 1975, fictional Vinewood actress Leonora Johnson was murdered — her case is referenced on in-game radio and in newspaper articles. Hidden across San Andreas are 50 letter scraps: white glowing pieces of paper lying on the ground. When nearby, you can hear paper rustling to help you locate them.

Collecting all 50 assembles a confession letter written by the killer, and reveals the murder weapon and details. The killer is Peter Dreyfuss, a renowned fictional film director.

Once all 50 scraps are assembled, a new mission marker (green question mark) appears on the map — playable as Franklin. The mission is called "A Starlet in Vinewood" and it concludes the mystery with a direct confrontation. Completing it earns the "A Mystery, Solved" achievement/trophy.

The Leonora Johnson story is a deliberate reference to the real-world Black Dahlia murder case of 1947, a high-profile unsolved Hollywood-adjacent murder. The letter scraps are a typical GTA collectible hunt given unusually strong narrative payoff.

07The Epsilon Program — Kifflom! (Michael's Cult Missions)

The Epsilon Program is a parody Scientology-style cult with its own in-game website (epsilonprogram.com in the game's browser). After the story mission "Father and Son," Michael can access the site, complete an evaluation form, and trigger a series of eight increasingly absurd Strangers & Freaks missions.

The missions escalate in cost and absurdity:

• Mission 1 — Seeking the Truth: Drive to Raton Canyon for a cutscene. Then donate $500 to the Epsilon website to progress.
• Mission 2 — Accepting the Truth: Donate a further $5,000.
• Mission 3 — Assuming the Truth: Steal and deliver five specific vehicles.
• Mission 4 — Bearing the Truth: Purchase Epsilon robes ($25,000 on the website) and wear them for 10 in-game days. Sleep repeatedly as Michael to pass time quickly.
• Mission 5 — Exercising the Truth: Walk five consecutive miles while wearing the robes in the Epsilon pilgrimage zone.
• Mission 6 — Unknowing the Truth (finale): Donate $50,000, then escort a van of cult money. You can betray the cult here, kill the escorts, and keep the $2,100,000 inside — the most profitable outcome. Alternatively follow through as instructed for a different, far less rewarding ending.

Completing all eight missions unlocks 10 optional Epsilon Tracts collectibles scattered across the map, which Marnie Allen (a GTA IV returning character) directs Michael toward via text message riddles. The reward is the gold "Kifflom!" trophy/achievement, one of the hardest in the game to obtain.

08The Lost Hatch — LOST Reference and the GTA IV Bowling Message

Far east of Sandy Shores, beneath the water near the San Chianski Mountain Range, there is a large metal hatch on the ocean floor — a direct reference to the famous hatch from the TV series LOST. The hatch itself cannot be safely approached; the game kills the player if they swim too close. It can be observed from a distance underwater.

The hatch emits a rhythmic tapping sound — tap code (similar in structure to Morse code). The decoded message reads: "Hey, you never call, how'd you fancy going bowling?" This is a double easter egg: a nod to LOST's mysterious hatch, and simultaneously a reference to GTA IV's Roman Bellic, whose most memorable running joke was calling Niko Bellic to go bowling at inconvenient moments.

This single easter egg layers two separate pop-culture references into one unmarked underwater location — a good example of how GTA 5 rewards players who explore without any guide.

09The Jetpack — Confirmed Unresolved

A jetpack appeared in GTA: San Andreas (2004) and was beloved by players. The Mount Chiliad mural's jetpack symbol led to years of searching. To date, no jetpack has been found hidden in GTA 5's single-player story mode. Community data miners and explorers have covered the map extensively without confirming one.

A jetpack (the Thruster) was later added to GTA Online in the Doomsday Heist update (December 2017) and can be purchased through Warstock Cache & Carry. This is a separate, purchasable vehicle — not the hidden secret the Chiliad mural appeared to hint at.

Whether Rockstar ever intended a hidden story-mode jetpack, removed it before launch, or deliberately placed the symbol as misdirection remains officially unaddressed. It is the one major unsolved element of the Chiliad mystery.

10Other Notable Secrets

GTA 5 contains dozens of smaller references and hidden details. Some of the most noted:

• Bigfoot Thermal in "Predator": Described above — a Bigfoot heat signature visible for a few seconds during a standard story mission.
• GTA IV connections: Packie McReary from GTA IV (a member of the McReary family from The Ballad of Gay Tony / The Lost and Damned) can be encountered during a random event and recruited as a heist gunman in GTA Online. The Lost Hatch message also references Roman Bellic. Newspapers in-game show Johnny Klebitz (GTA IV: The Lost and Damned protagonist) and reference events from Liberty City.
• Michael's hallucinogenic missions: Two story missions — involving alien abduction and an underwater sequence — are written as drug-induced hallucinations for Michael. These are scripted content rather than hidden secrets, but they feed the game's alien/UFO theme deliberately.
• Alien statue near Sandy Shores: An alien humanoid statue stands near the Sandy Shores train tunnel. It is there as permanent world detail, not a triggered easter egg.
• The Vinewood Sign hiker: A random encounter on Mount Lee (the mountain behind the Vinewood sign) involves a female hiker who asks to be driven somewhere. How this plays out depends on the player's choices — it is one of GTA 5's darker random events.
• Epsilon Program license plates: Some cars in the game carry license plates reading "KIFFLOM" — an in-world nod to the cult that is visible long before the Epsilon missions unlock.
