KCD2 Romance Guide All Romance Options & Companions

Romance in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is more varied — and more forgiving — than most players expect from a historically grounded RPG. Henry can pursue five fully developed romantic storylines across the game's two regions as well as a handful of shorter encounters at key moments in the main and side quests. Unlike many RPGs, KCD2 does not require exclusivity: you can pursue multiple characters simultaneously with no in-world penalty, with one notable exception explained below. What it does require is preparation — the right Charisma rating, the right quest steps completed in the right order, and knowing when to pick the heart-shaped dialogue option before the moment passes. This guide covers every romance option, what quests unlock each one, the stats and perks that help, and the one buff that makes all the effort mechanically worthwhile.

01How the Romance System Works

Romance in KCD2 is woven into the standard dialogue system rather than separated into a distinct relationship menu. The signal to watch for is a red heart icon displayed alongside certain dialogue choices — that icon marks a flirtatious or romantic option that, if selected at the right moment with sufficient stats, moves Henry closer to a romantic outcome with that character.

Three stats govern how well Henry performs in romantic and social situations:

• Charisma — the primary stat for all social encounters, affected by appearance, clothing quality, cleanliness, and social reputation. A Henry in well-maintained fine clothing who has recently bathed will have a meaningfully higher effective Charisma than one arriving from combat in dirty, damaged gear.
• Speech — governs persuasion dialogue checks and grows through frequent conversation. Several romances require hitting a specific Speech threshold during a key dialogue; this cannot be compensated by Charisma alone.
• Scholarship — affects dialogue options with educated or aristocratic characters. The Rosa and Katherine romances in particular require a workable Scholarship level to unlock certain conversation paths.

Most romance conversations do not offer a retry if you pick the wrong dialogue option or fail a stat check. Preparing your stats and appearance before known romance trigger points is the practical approach — the same preparation you would make before any high-stakes social interaction in KCD2.

One general exclusivity rule applies: pursuing the Black Bartoush romance locks out the Widow Johanka romance within the same event, and vice versa. All other romance options can coexist freely throughout the campaign. The game also contains a "faithful to Theresa" path for players who reject every romantic opportunity — the ending acknowledges Henry's choice in a brief unique reference.

02Klara — The Herbalist at Nebakov

Klara is a healer and herbalist stationed at Nebakov Fortress, and she is the earliest long-term romance available to Henry in the game's first region. She becomes available during the "Back in the Saddle" main quest when Henry travels to the camp with Hans Capon following the opening sequence.

The romance progresses in two stages across two quests:

1. During "Back in the Saddle": After you duel Adjutant Michael for Hans Capon's honour, seek Klara out and talk to her. She will ask for help gathering herbs — specifically Valerian, Comfrey, and Sage. Offer to help. Return the herbs and continue the conversation, complimenting her knowledge and approach to healing. A heart dialogue option becomes available here — accept the invitation to meet later.
2. During "The Finger of God": Klara asks Henry to help treat three wounded soldiers — Mark, Kozliek, and Zwerk. Successfully treating all three sets up the final romantic scene. A Speech skill check is required at the critical moment (sources indicate around Speech level 14); failing it ends the romance here. If you pass, rest and the scene plays out.

Completing Klara's romance rewards Henry with the Time Well Spent buff — see the dedicated section below. She represents one of the more natural, quest-driven romances in the game, tied directly into the healing and support theme of the Nebakov section rather than feeling like a detour.

03Lady Rosa Ruthard — The Literary Romance

Lady Rosa is Lord Ruthard's daughter and the romance option most tied to Henry's growing literacy and social standing in the game's second region, Kuttenberg. Players who have been levelling Scholarship will find her arc the most rewarding and thematically matched to the broader Kuttenberg storyline.

Rosa's romance spans three main quests:

• "Via Argentum" — you meet Rosa for the first time. Focus on making a positive impression through dialogue and choosing options that show curiosity and respect rather than bluntness.
• "Taking French Leave" — Rosa has lost a book. Retrieving it requires accessing Maleshov Fortress via a hidden passage rather than the front gate. Critically: return the book to Rosa immediately after retrieving it. Multiple sources confirm that delaying or holding onto the book causes this step to fail, blocking the romance permanently. Read the book before returning it — Rosa will ask about the contents, and having read it opens up a more meaningful conversation.
• "Oratores" — the romance reaches its conclusion during this quest. Rosa is rescued from Otto von Bergow in the preceding quest, "Dancing with the Devil"; in "Oratores" you escort her home. Wash Henry and his clothing before approaching her in the palace courtyard. A clean, presentable Henry dramatically improves the dialogue outcome. The "Kiss Rosa" option becomes available at the end of the conversation if all prior steps were completed correctly.

The Rosa romance rewards patience and attention to quest sequencing more than any other in KCD2. Do not rush past the book quest, and keep Henry presentable throughout the Kuttenberg segment.

04Katherine — The Courtly Romance

Katherine is encountered at Trosky Castle early in the game during "The Lady's Favor", where she appears to not recognize Henry — a deliberate choice by the writing that resolves as her questline develops. She becomes one of the most fully realized romance arcs in the game but is also the latest to complete, stretching into the game's final chapters.

Katherine's arc runs through four quests: "The Lady's Favor", "The Sword and the Quill", "The Fifth Commandment", and "Hunger and Despair". Her romance requires the highest combined Social stats of any character — meaningful investment in Charisma, Speech, and Scholarship is required to pass her dialogue checks. High-Charisma attire and maintained cleanliness help throughout her arc.

One important exclusivity note: pursuing the Katherine romance during the later quests may block the option to pursue Hans Capon romantically in "Hunger and Despair". If completing both is a priority, research the specific branching point before committing — the two arcs share a narrative collision late in the story.

05Hans Capon — Your Companion

Hans Capon is Henry's primary companion throughout KCD2, carrying forward his relationship from the first game. He accompanies Henry across major questlines in both the Trosky and Kuttenberg regions, providing both narrative context and combat backup in certain encounters. His romantic path is distinct from the other options in that it is built through consistent small choices across the entire campaign rather than a single dedicated romance quest.

The key is selecting heart-marked dialogue options with Hans whenever they appear throughout the game — from the earliest interactions in Troskowitz through the Kuttenberg chapters. Missing too many of these conversational beats early on makes the later romantic option harder to unlock.

The dedicated quest "A Game of Love" involves helping Hans compose love letters, but his romantic arc has implications that play out in later quests including "The Italian Job" and "Hunger and Despair". As noted in the Katherine section above, these two romance arcs converge in the final chapters — choose which you are pursuing before "Hunger and Despair" begins.

Hans's prominence as a companion means his relationship with Henry carries real weight throughout the story regardless of whether the romantic path is pursued. His arc is one of the better companion storylines in recent RPGs and worth engaging with fully even for players who prefer a platonic reading.

06Margaret — The Mill Thief

Margaret's questline starts at a mill on the road between Bylany and the Old Lhota fast-travel point, during the quest "Damsel in Distress" — talk to Baker Lapek in Bylany once he has a quest-tipster icon to get pointed there. You'll hear a woman shouting from a locked shed; freeing her reveals she isn't the miller's wife as first assumed but a thief who has stolen from the miller. How you resolve this first encounter (a speech check, paying for what she stole, or simply leaving) doesn't lock you out of what follows.

The romance itself unfolds later, in a separate quest called "Victimised", set around Kuttenberg. Margaret reunites with Henry at a crossroads inn and reveals why she stole from the miller in the first place — her friend Anezkha was left pregnant and abandoned by him. She then proposes a new scheme: blackmailing a tailor named Latsek using a sleeping potion and a set of fine clothing to gain his trust before confronting him. Agreeing to help and following her plan through to the end is what unlocks the romance; offering her cash instead of going along with the scheme ends the questline early.

Warning: After spending the night with Margaret, she steals 20% of whatever Groschen Henry is carrying at the time (commonly around 250 Groschen mid-game, but it scales with your current purse). This is not a glitch — it is written into her character arc. The money is gone; there is no quest to recover it. Consider spending down or stashing your Groschen before pursuing her romance if you are carrying a lot.

07Short-Term Encounters

Several romance encounters are tied to specific quests and events rather than long-term storylines. Each provides a self-contained scene and, in many cases, the Time Well Spent buff.

• Doubravka (Wedding Crashers) — available during the Semine wedding in the "Wedding Crashers" main quest early in the game. Ask Doubravka to dance; a Charisma check is required to impress her. Passing it leads to additional scenes later in the wedding sequence.
• Myshka (Wedding Crashers) — also at the Semine wedding. Rescue Myshka from unwanted advances by Vuytek, then dance with her and join her for a conversation by the pond. A more low-key encounter than Doubravka but grants the Time Well Spent buff.
• Black Bartoush (For Victory!) — Black Bartoush is a weapons trainer who appears at the "For Victory!" pre-battle feast in the Trosky region. Speak with him at the main table and ask about local entertainment. Choosing to pursue his romance here locks out the Widow Johanka option for this event.
• Widow Johanka (For Victory!) — also available at the "For Victory!" feast. Show compassion about her late husband and offer assistance during the evening. Choosing Widow Johanka here locks out Black Bartoush. Her encounter grants the Time Well Spent buff.
• Lousy Mary (Into the Underworld) — available in Kuttenberg's city bathhouse during the "Into the Underworld" quest, accessed via Madam Beata. Provides companionship and local knowledge alongside the encounter.
• Bathhouse maids (any bathhouse) — the most consistently available option throughout the game. Visiting any bathhouse and paying for the full service — available in both the Trosky and Kuttenberg regions from the start of each chapter — grants the Time Well Spent buff. The earliest accessible option is the bathhouse in Zhelejov in the Trosky region.

08The Time Well Spent Buff

Almost every romance encounter — both the long-term storylines and the shorter events — rewards Henry with a buff called Time Well Spent. The buff provides:

• +1 Strength
• +1 Agility
• +1 Vitality
• +1 Debauchery
• Duration: 1 hour and 40 minutes of in-game time

The three combat stats make Henry meaningfully more effective during the buff's window, while the Debauchery bump is a minor side effect of the encounter itself. Time Well Spent is considered one of the better pre-fight buffs in KCD2 because it improves multiple core combat-relevant stats simultaneously rather than focusing on a single attribute.

The most repeatable source of Time Well Spent is bathhouse service — available multiple times per in-game day at any bathhouse for a modest fee. There is no daily limit on how many times Henry can visit. Using a bathhouse before a known difficult fight or skill-training session is a straightforward way to get consistent benefit from the buff without depending on quest timing.

09Stats, Perks, and Appearance Tips

Preparation before romance-critical moments is the difference between success and a permanently missed opportunity. These habits help across all romance options.

• Wash Henry and his clothes before any romantic interaction. Cleanliness is one of the most direct inputs into the effective Charisma stat. Visit a wash trough, river laundry spot, or bathhouse beforehand. A bathhouse visit improves both cleanliness and health simultaneously — and grants Time Well Spent.
• Equip appropriate clothing. Fine doublets, quality boots, and well-maintained garments signal social standing. Tier 3 quality clothing provides a meaningful Charisma boost over standard or working attire. The clothing does not need to be armour — a well-dressed Henry in civilian clothes outperforms a dirty knight in romance dialogue.
• Use the Ladies' Man perk if you plan to pursue multiple romance options. This perk adds +2 to all skill checks with female characters (not just persuasion and impression), and also gives a 15% discount when buying from female merchants and a 25% discount at bathhouses.
• Use the Good Natured perk for a +2 bonus to Persuasion, Impression, and Presence checks that applies across all social dialogue — not just romance but also merchant negotiation and mission-critical conversation checks.
• Carry a perfume. The Lion perfume temporarily increases Henry's Charisma by a fixed amount for a short duration. Use it immediately before sitting down with a romance target. Perfumes are sold by some merchants in larger settlements.
• Level Speech actively. The Klara romance requires approximately Speech level 14 for its critical check. Speech grows through using it in conversation — take every opportunity to engage in speech-based dialogue during side quests and merchant interactions, not just when you know a romance beat is coming.

General principle: treat romance encounters the same way you would treat a high-stakes merchant negotiation or noble audience. The stat and appearance requirements are similar — the difference is that the timing window in a romance is often harder to recover from if you miss it.
